Before you apply

Online application process advice

BNY Mellon's Recruitment team is keen to provide as much support to you as possible right through the process.

This page contains some hints and tips which may help you during the application stage.

General advice:

  • Research this website and our global website to make sure that the company is right for you
  • Try to remain flexible right through the process. You may be called for telephone screen, numerical reasoning testing or/and interviewing at short notice. It is always best practice to make yourself available wherever possible to demonstrate your commitment and interest in joining BNY Mellon
  • Complete all the required fields in your application. It is in your best interest to provide everything we have asked for
  • Be realistic in your salary expectations. One of the main reasons for candidate's failing to progress is when their salary expectations exceed that of the role. BNY Mellon's Recruitment Team are more than happy to discuss salaries further at telephone screen stage, however salaries are non-negotiable and are based on the responsibilities of the role. In the same manner, we shall not offer you a lower salary simply because you demonstrate flexibility in your requirements

CV/resume advice:

  • Include essential contact information including your name, contact numbers, home address and email address. Make sure these details are correct and you check your emails/messages regularly so that you can respond to any BNY Mellon communication in a timely manner
  • Give details of your educational background including the name of the school, college or institution where you received your qualifications and the dates you were there. It is essential you provide accurate details of academic achievements and qualifications as we do stringent checks in this area
  • Ensure the content is accurate. BNY Mellon's reputation is built on our employees adopting the highest attention to detail. Before you send us your CV/resume, check that all elements are correct – including the spelling and grammar

Interview Advice

Interviews can be stressful, but they don't have to be.

With the right preparation and frame of mind, there's no reason why you can't enter the interview feeling confident. Remember, this is your chance to show us how good you are.

This page contains some hints and tips which may help you during the interview stage.

Pre-interview preparation:

  • Log on to our websites to find out more information about what the Company does (e.g. you will need to be able to explain what a Custodian bank is)
  • Prepare a couple of relevant questions to ask your interviewers at the end of the interview (e.g. you might want to find out more about the training programme at BNY Mellon or more around the business' growth plans in Manchester)
  • Be clear on your reasons for your interest in pursuing a career in financial services and what attracted you to BNY Mellon
  • Be able to articulate both your strengths and development needs as well as outline your desired career plan
  • Arrive early – at least 10 minutes before the start time of your interview
  • Dress smartly in a full business suit (gentlemen must wear a shirt and tie). Candidates who are inappropriately dressed will not be interviewed
  • Stay relaxed as the interviewers are looking for polite, confident and enthusiastic candidates who have prepared adequately for the interview

During the interview:

  • Body language is important. Shake hands firmly, smile and sit upright rather than slouching. Show interest in what is being said by nodding
  • Don't be afraid to accept a drink if offered one by your interviewers
  • Don't be too bashful; but also don't be too bold. Aim to maintain 80% eye contact with whoever is talking to you
  • Speak clearly and concisely, but avoid one-word answers – 'yes' and 'no' won't tell your interviewer anything and will ensure you don't progress to the next stage
  • Answer the question you've been asked – rather than just talking about everything you know. This means listening carefully to what is being said
  • Be enthusiastic, but don't babble. Don't be afraid of silences. Take time to form your responses as it's far better to think before you speak than to go off at a tangent during your answer
  • Ask the interviewer(s) to explain anything you don't understand
