BNY Mellon reaches milestone in Manchester with arrival of 1000th employee

BNY Mellon reaches milestone in Manchester with arrival of 1000th employee BNY Mellon has reached a landmark in the ongoing expansion of its Manchester operation after recruiting to fill the 1000th role created in the city.

The arrival of the leading asset management and securities services company has been one of the largest recent inward investments in Manchester. In just five years the operation has become a major global growth centre supporting over 30 of BNY Mellon’s international business lines.

The company opened its office at No1 Piccadilly in September 2005 with just a 50-strong team. Since then, BNY Mellon has on average created around 200 new roles every year and in 2009 opened a second office at 3 Hardman Street in Spinningfields to accommodate this continuing growth.

The 1000th position, a Senior Operations Manager role, is being filled by new recruit Ruth Caplan from Wigan.

Ruth said: “After 12-years as an Officer in the Royal Air Force I decided it was time for a change. I was seeking an organisation that would allow me to dovetail my leadership and management skills with the newly developed business skills I’d gained from studying for an Executive MBA.

“The growth here is creating a dynamic environment which offers just the challenge I need to fully test my qualities and experience. Whilst clearly a huge learning curve in a totally new industry for me, I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead.

“The team here spans such a broad range of ages, backgrounds and experience levels that there’s a real buzz about the place with everyone learning from each other and a strong desire to contribute to Manchester’s success.”

Jackie Williams, Managing Director of the Manchester operation said: “The people here are central to our growth and the success we’ve had over the past five years proves that Manchester is an ideal location to support a rapidly expanding international organisation.

“Ruth’s joined a team with a strong culture, identity and work ethic and the quality of service provided makes Manchester stand out as a key location within BNY Mellon globally.

“We’re also an example of how the private and public sectors, academic institutions and local talent can work together to develop a major operation in such a short space of time.

“This landmark is great, but it’s by no means the end of our expansion here.”

On a recent visit to Manchester the president of BNY Mellon, Gerald Hassell, also highlighted the strengths of Manchester and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the city.

He said: “Manchester has exceeded our expectations as a place to do business. What stands out for me is the quality and enthusiasm of the employees. They are fully focused on delivering the highest level of service, and the feedback I’ve had from clients shows that this approach is why BNY Mellon is such a success here and around the world.

“We’re completely committed to Manchester as a location to support our ongoing global growth and expect to continue developing and creating new career opportunities here over the next five years and beyond.”
